Hand Carved Stone in Residential Architecture

MARK E MULOCK AND JANE B KENNELLY

Natural stone and its use as a building material, is as ancient as history itself. And there is perhaps no other material used in architecture that carries the same aura of quality and permanence as stone does.

The Company

De Santana Stone Company, founded 14 years ago, and headquartered near Asheville, North Carolina, is at the forefront in providing hand-carved stone to the high-end residential community. It has been our privilege to work with leading architects, designers and home builders, along with discriminating homeowners. Many of De Santana’s projects are in North Carolina, with a growing number also being undertaken out-of-state.

The Product and the Process

What kind of architectural features can be done in stone? Stone may be chosen as a select focal point in the form of a beautiful fi replace, or perhaps a fountain. More extensive applications can include carved limestone columns, grand entries, balconies, balustrades, wall claddings, and accent pieces such as niches, and corbels (decorative supports). At De Santana, we can suggest the appropriate type of stone to complement the design and ambiance of the home along with the individual tastes of the homeowner. Using in-house talent, we produce design concepts for each piece. Next, after client-approval, detailed drawings are presented to the quarry. Long-term relationships we’ve built with our quarries in Mexico and Italy over many years help in the effi ciency and consistency of our work.

Service

De Santana is earning a reputation in the industry as a full-service company. We are able to bring to bear both the skills and the team eff ort to manage each stone project from its inception on the drawing board to its fi nal installation. We strive to fi t our workfl ow smoothly into the progression of the building project at large.

Applications

In some cases, natural stone goes hand-in-hand with a particular architectural style. French Country, Italian Tuscan and Mediterranean come to mind as examples. At other times, a not-so-obvious application can work beautifully with a little skill and imagination. Arts and Crafts and Traditional styles can be enhanced with columns and custom fi replaces, perfectly designed for these styles of homes. Also, Contemporary homes can benefi t from the smooth, solid and natural look of stone.
